What you need to know
Location

Make your way to the Cairns Aquarium, home to more than 15,000 specimens and 10 ecosystems. It is the only aquarium in the world to exclusively showcase the stunning aquatic wildlife from tropical North Queensland’s two World Heritage-listed areas – the Great Barrier Reef and the Wet Tropics Rainforest. At the Cairns Aquarium, you will learn how a drop of rain descends from the Cairns Mountain Ranges into streams and rivers, through the rainforest, across the mangroves, along the shallow lagoons of the Great Barrier Reef, and finally, into the depths of the Coral Sea. Cairns Aquarium opens at 10.00 am

At 12.45 pm you will be collected by Cairns Discovery Tours guide to continue your afternoon exploring Cairns city sights and the surrounding region. Visit Cairns Museum, St Monica’s Cathedral, Cairns Botanic Gardens, Cairns scenic lookout, Lower Barron Gorge National Park with Surprise Creek Falls, and beautiful Palm Cove.

Itinerary

  • Make your way to visit Cairns’ Aquarium. Self-guide where you will see the animals and habitats endemic to Tropical North Queensland and learn about the Wet Tropics Rainforest and the Great Barrier Reef.
  • 11.30am Turtle Hospital 30 minute Tour. Get up close and personal to the sea turtles in our care on a 30-minute guided tour of our Turtle Rehabilitation Centre. Learn about the dangers that sea turtles face, and how we rescue, treat, release and track these precious animals.
  • 12.45pm you will be collected by your local Cairns guide from the entrance of the Cairns Aquarium.
  • Discover Cairns as you step inside St. Monica’s Cathedral where you will marvel at the world’s largest themed stained-glass windows. * Explore Cairns and delve into the city’s history as you immerse yourself in the rich cultural heritage that is Tropical North Queensland.
  • Visit the Cairns Museum in the heart of the city. You will be greeted for an exclusive tour of the museum (free re-entry included, valid for 3 days).
  • Continue to Cairns Flecker Botanic Gardens to discover the unique flora of the tropics. Enjoy a guided walk in the gardens before a delicious Devonshire Tea freshly made scones, jam and cream with tea or coffee at Noa’s Cafe in the leafy suburb of Edge Hill.
  • Stop for a photo opportunity at a scenic city lookout, with views of the Great Barrier Reef and Coral Sea.
  • Next, visit the Lower Barron Gorge National Park and Surprise Creek Falls where there are plenty more photo opportunities.
  • Continue on to Palm Cove, one of Cairns’ most picturesque northern beaches. Walk along the jetty or feel the sand between your toes on Palm Cove beach before the tour concludes.
  • With return transfers to your accommodation.

Time

  • Guests are to make their own way to the Cairns Aquarium for admission. Cairns Aquarium opens at 10am Cairns Discovery Tours will collect you from the entrance of the Aquarium at 12.40pm to continue the City Sights and Surrounds tour. Tours return back to your accommodation at approximately 6pm.
  • Tour operates Tuesday to Sunday
